Today's 3-Minute Digest of the AI Space

TL;DR

1) Google announced Gemma — their own open LLM based on Gemini.

2) +90% of physicians and +60% of doctors in the U.S. feel burnout frequently. The believe that AI can largely turn that around is what makes them not quit their medical profession

3) Pentagon ramps up efforts to deploy AI and LLMs into their day-to-day operations, and bigger scope projects

4) Princeton researchers reaches breakthrough with AI to potentially generate boundless clean fusion energy. Could be one of the biggest breakthroughs (if reliable) in clean energy.

Key points:

  • As they describe it themselves: "A family of lightweight, state-of-the art open models built from the same research and technology used to create the Gemini models".

  • Is open for commercial use.

  • It outperforms Mistral AI 7B and LLaMa 2 on Human Eval and MMLU.

  • It's the first open LLM based on Gemini.

  • Instruction models in 2B and 7B variants.

  • 8192 default context window.

  • MMLU score of 64.56, average leaderboard score 63.75 for 7B.

  • 2B model compatible with mobile phones.

  • Available on HuggingFace, Kaggle and Vertex AI.

Key Points:

  • A new survey found that over 90% of U.S. physicians experience burnout on a regular basis, with excessive administrative tasks being the main cause.

  • More than 60% of doctors have considered leaving the medical field due to overwhelming workloads and lack of in-person time with patients.

  • Despite these challenges, 83% of doctors believe that AI could help by streamlining administrative work, improving diagnosis accuracy, and identifying patterns in patient data.

  • While some doctors are concerned about the loss of human touch in healthcare, twice as many participants in the survey believe that AI will ultimately be part of the solution.

Key Points:

  • The Pentagon is holding meetings with tech industry leaders to accelerate the discovery and implementation of useful military applications of artificial intelligence.

  • Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have the potential to revolutionize military and intelligence operations by quickly summarizing vast amounts of information and aiding in decision-making.

  • However, LLMs still have vulnerabilities, including "hallucinations" where they generate inaccurate information, and the potential for adversarial hackers to exploit the systems.

  • The Pentagon is seeking industry help and investment in AI technologies, as they acknowledge the need for reliable and secure AI models for defense purposes.

Key Points:

  • Researchers from Princeton University and its Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory have developed an AI model that can predict and avoid plasma instabilities in donut-shaped reactors, a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion research.

  • The AI model can predict tearing mode instabilities 300 milliseconds before they happen, giving enough time to intervene and keep the fusion reaction under control.

  • This AI breakthrough is significant because previous studies have only been able to suppress tearing instabilities after they happen, while this new model can predict and avoid them before they appear.

  • AI will play a large role in controlling and maintaining fusion reactions, with the potential to optimize the reaction, harvest energy, and operate fusion devices more effectively.

  • “We don’t teach the reinforcement learning model all of the complex physics of a fusion reaction. We tell it what the goal is—to maintain a high-powered reaction—what to avoid—a tearing mode instability—and the knobs it can turn to achieve those outcomes. Over time, it learns the optimal pathway for achieving the goal of high power while avoiding the punishment of an instability.” said one of the researchers from the project.
